Twenty some-odd years have passed since I left the halls of BBCHS, and the person I see in the mirror across from me is both the same and vastly different than the one who walked thru the halls, from class to class, sport or choir practice after school & then home or to hang out with friends. The progression of age, being wed to a wonderful Lady, fatherhood and travels all had influence in what changes have occurred, none of any drastic nature mind you, just ... subtitles.

There are times when my thoughts drift back to those years -glimpses of smiles & tears, triumphs and defeats from days long gone now- and I rethink events, some great, most just small fragments in time that neither shaped world history nor even the small world of a high school teen.

When I say "rethink" it's not REMAKING an event, just slight, small changes in attitude or response. I don't recreate BBCHS winning the State Basketball Championship with me leading the team (especially since a wrestler would have hell to pay if Coach Trombetta or Barclay even THOUGHT we would touch a B-ball) -to quote Coach Carley...."Hicks goes for a rebound like he goes for a fumble"....Basketball is not a blood sport.

But...there are small things that stick in my mind. I should have made sure that this person knew I appreciated their friendship more; I should have let one person off the hook for "slighting" me in some small way; I should have shoved another thru a locker...I should have told one girl I knew that she had gorgeous eyes, and she did. The warmest eyes, that could pull in the twinkle of the stars. I would have told her then, but she also had hellacious pair of ... well a young man's mind, and she would have thought "EYES......yeah, riiiiiight"
